How Stars Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple Can Make Awards Show History

Even if three seasons of Ted Lasso is all that we get, the show’s fans still have as much reason to celebrate like the cast after its many wins at the Emmys. Speaking of the Emmys, the Apple TV+ hit show has its fair share of wins, and if stars Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple repeat as nominees in 2022, they would go down in history and join a short list of same-show nominees.

Hannah Waddingham and Juno Temple earned nominations as ‘Ted Lasso’ cleaned up at the 2021 Emmys

Ted Lasso dominated the 2021 Primetime Emmys. The series earned 13 nominations and won four statuettes for the on-screen talent:

  • Outstanding Comedy Series
  • Jason Sudeikis for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series (which came with Sudeikis’ in-character acceptance speech)
  • Brett Goldstein for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
  • Waddingham for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

The numbers climb to 20 nominations and seven wins when you include the Creative Arts Emmys.

Actors from the show competed against their castmates in several award categories. Goldstein bested Brendan Hunt, Nick Mohammed, and Jeremy Swift in the supporting actor category, and Waddingham beat out Temple for supporting actress. If Waddingham and Temple repeat their nominations in 2022, they’ll do what only a few actors from the same show have done before.

Waddingham and Temple could join a historic list with repeat Emmys nominations

Waddingham had a guest role at Septa Unella in Game of Thrones, which won its fair share of Emmys, but Ted Lasso gave the English actor her first nomination and win. Her acceptance speech delighted fans, too. Likewise, Temple’s nomination in 2021 was her first at the Emmys.

When the 2022 awards come out, we could see Waddingham and Temple join a very short list.

As GoldDerby notes, female actors from the same show have been nominated for the same award just 12 times in history. Recently, a combination of Leslie Jones, Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, and Cecily Strong shared nominations for their work on Saturday Night Live. Modern Family’s Julie Bowen and Sofía Vergara, Friends’ Lisa Kudrow and Jennifer Aniston, and Sex and the City’s Kim Cattrall and Cynthia Nixon also earned simultaneous Outstanding Supporting Actress nominations.

Ted Lasso’s impressive showing at the 2021 Emmys could potentially happen again in 2022. All of those 2021 nominations came for Season 1; Season 2 saw the characters grow even deeper, sometimes in even more emotionally devastating ways. And with Ted Lasso set to return for Season 3, we’ll likely see the show earn more nominations in the future.

Voting for the 2022 Emmys ends June 28.

What we know about ‘Ted Lasso’ Season 3 so far

We don’t know what Ted Lasso Season 3 has in store — will tiny AFC Richmond take down mighty West Ham? Does Keeley have to make a choice between Roy and Jamie? Will Sam leave the club? Can Rupert get any snarkier? — but there are a few certainties.

Ted Lasso’s first season lasted 10 episodes, and Season 2 contained 12. Apple reportedly ordered 12 episodes for Season 3. The crew commenced on the third season in March 2022. Star and producer Brendan Hunt said a rumored summer start date is unlikely.

Season 2 ended with Mohammed’s Nate doing a heel turn to be the villain. It was an unexpected outcome for a character that started as a timid equipment manager, but the actor said fans should expect more changes for Nate in Season 3.

We still have a third Ted Lasso to look forward to, but will there be a Season 4? Goldstein said the writing team approached its job as if Season 3 were the end of the series. Meanwhile, Hunt said he couldn’t say for sure that the next one will be the last season.

Whether or not Ted Lasso Season 3 is the end of the road, we will likely see the creators honored for their work at the Emmys.
