Pro wrestling superstar Cody Rhodes has had an interesting career so far, going from WWE to promotions like ROH, NJPW, Impact, and AEW, before beginning his second stint with the biggest pro wrestling company in the world. Over the years, he has accumulated a lot of unbelievable stories to share with fans. But not many are as wild and unbelievable as the one of his birth.
On the recent episode of The Dale Jr. Download podcast, Rhodes shared a story about the chaos that had ensued before and after he was born which involved one of Dale Earnhardt Jr’s wrestling idols. The scene is set in the 1980s and the theme of the story is pure chaos. Junior and his co-host Mike Davis could not stop laughing as Rhodes told the hilarious tale of the time he was brought into this world.
How Dale Earnhardt Jr’s wrestling idol became the godfather of Cody Rhodes
“The American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes is the son of “The American Dream,” the late great Dusty Rhodes. He was born in the mid-80s, a time when wrestling was slowly reaching the heights to which it would get to eventually. Unlike now, the wrestling market wasn’t a monopoly back then.
Vince McMahon did not have a hold of the entire American market and the NWA was one of the big promotions. As per the story, NWA, led by Jim Crockett Jr at the time, had gone to do a show at the Forum in LA. Dusty Rhodes, Cody’s father, was a part of the company and he had traveled with Cody’s mother, Michelle Rubio.
During the event, Rubio went into labor and had to be flown out. Cody said that the flight also had Magnum T.A., of whom Dale Jr is a big fan, Arn Anderson, and Manny Fernandez (The Raging Bull), and all hell had broken loose in the sky.
“So my dad’s having a party in the sky trying to make my birth on the other side, here at Charlotte, at Presbyterian Hospital, and Magnum is on the flight with him, and a wrestler named Manny Fernandez, The Raging Bull. Arn Anderson is also on that flight. I think at the time they didn’t want anyone knowing that. They just get absolutely wasted, just beyond hammered,” Cody said.
By then, Rhodes said that he had already taken his first breath, and his father Dusty, in his hammered condition, decided to name a godfather for his newborn son.
“It was up between The Raging Bull and Magnum T.A. and he picked Magnum. But this is again one of these moments where they are just flinging it, you know, like who knows,” Cody added.
Though not the most hygienic, the story of Cody Rhodes’s birth is certainly wild in every sense of the word. But here is another funny bit. Magnum T.A. had forgotten that he was Cody Rhodes’s godfather.

When Magnum T.A. forgot that he was Cody Rhodes’s godfather
The former WWE Intercontinental Champion would go on to talk about the time when he had to remind Magnum T.A. that he was in fact his godfather, and it took Magnum a while before he recalled the moment he was named godfather.
“Magnum had forgot until I was like 20 years old and I finally told him, ‘You know you’re my godfather?’ ‘Oh my gosh, yes, I do.’ He was at the christening and all that,” Rhodes concluded, calling him one of “the most nice guys about modern wrestling.”
During the peak of his powers, Magnum T.A. was one of the most entertaining and an absolute tank of a wrestler. Unfortunately, he suffered a terrible accident the year after Cody was born which ended his career.
He was involved in a car crash in 1986 which reportedly “exploded” his C-4 and C-5 vertebrae. The doctors at the time believed that Magnum’s physical conditioning had saved his life but his right side was paralyzed for months, meaning that his in-ring career would come to an end.
No one will know what Magnum T.A. could have achieved in the field of professional wrestling. For fans of wrestling of the 80s like Dale Jr, Magnum was an absolute beast of a man and had the potential to become one of the greatest of all time.
