Hillwalker Dies In Hospital After Rescue

A hillwalker rescued by search teams after being missing overnight with two others has died.

Bobby Thomson, 64, George Crosbie, 73, and Jeffrey Stewart, 74, had not been seen since they headed off in the hills around Durisdeer in Dumfries and Galloway on Tuesday afternoon.

The men were found 2.5 miles east of the village on Wednesday following a large-scale search involving police and mountain rescue teams and they were airlifted to hospital.

But a police statement later said: "Police Scotland can confirm that one of the three missing walkers recovered earlier today near Durisdeer has been pronounced dead at Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

"The two other men are currently being treated for hypothermia in the hospital. Next of kin are being informed and the procurator fiscal has been informed.''

The trio had told family members they would be home by 3.30pm on Tuesday but relatives called the police two hours later when they failed to return.

Overnight efforts to look for them were hampered by driving rain and very strong winds.

But the trio were traced when the search team, which included a Coastguard helicopter, continued the hunt on Wednesday.

Police have not confirmed which of the men has died.
