Calvin J. Clements Sr., a veteran writer for TV and the screen, died March 11 at his home in Tarzana of cancer. He was 82.
A New Jersey native, Clements joined the Navy at age 16. Following his service he moved to New York, where he became a fireboat pilot. At that time he began writing novels and stories for such magazines as Colliers, Nation’s Business and the Saturday Evening Post.
In 1959, Clements began writing for TV, including such shows as “Desilu Playhouse,” “Alcoa Hour,” “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” and “Doctor Kildare.”
A Cowboy Hall of Fame inductee and recipient of the Western Writers of America Award, Clements was best known for writing Westerns, including episodes of the series “Have Gun, Will Travel” and “Gunsmoke” and the movie “Firecreek,” starring James Stewart and Henry Fonda..

He is survived by his wife, Agnes; two sons, a daughter and four grandchildren.
